HealthFest 2013 was an event we did here at Gardner STEM Magnet School. Along with the EAST @ Gardner "Get Moving" Booth, there were our school's jogging group, The Trojan Trotters, members of Mercy Hospital and the Emergency Room Staff, Cub Scout Pack 3, National Park Community College Nursing School, Gardner's Physical Education Instructor, Ken Freeman the Trails Coordinator, Morgan Nick Foundation, K-9 Unit from the Garland County Sheriff's Department, LifeNet Emergency Medical Service, Hot Springs Fire Department, Henderson State University Teacher's College Students, and Amy Johnson a member of Team USA, in the Sprint Age Group Triathlon held in London, England. It was a great evening with volunteers, faculty, staff, students, parents, and other guests.
The nursing students had booths about brushing and flossing, a Fact Sheet Directory, Don't Get Burned fire safety, Hand Washing, Smart 911 Training to Booth, Medicine or Poison, First Aid Information, Being Fit Can be Fun, and Many Ways
to be Active (hands on physical exercise and game activities).
The Cub Scouts set up a booth about healthy snacks, calorie counting, and making trail mix.
Ken Freeman, Hot Springs Parks and Recreation Trails Coordinator, talked to students about bicycle and hiking trails around the area.
The Morgan Nick Foundation Child DNA Kit Booth was an opportunity for parents and students to put together their personal Child DNA kit. It included the student's fingerprints and information about emergencies and what to do.
The Garland County Sheriff's Department K-9 Unit was represented by an officer with his dog. The students were able to talk with him and meet his very special dog.
The Emergency Medical Service was here with an ambulance. Students and their parents were able to go into the ambulance and see what it looked like as well as see the special equipment inside.
The Hot Springs Fire Department was represented with some of its finest firefighters. They also brought along a fire truck for students to see. Students and parents were able to get up close and tour the fire truck.
The Henderson State University Teacher's College Students were on hand with a great physical activity set up in our Science Lab. They offered the students the chance to join in the "Heart Dance". They had videos to dance with in this
session. The purpose was to be active and get your heart rate up. They also gave each student an activity booklet to take home and color with more information about eating healthy and exercise.
Amy Johnson a member of Team USA, in the Sprint Age Group Triathlon held in London, England was on hand to visit with students and talk about being healthy. She is a "star" the students recognize from our weekly Classercize Program. It is an
exercise video series we use to enhance our P.E. program with an extra 30 minutes per week of physical activity they can do in the classroom along with the video.
